Greetings! This update is two fold, the first pertaining to our build schedule, certifications, and other boring stuff. Please scroll down to the bold text if you want to skip the following part.
It is with bittersweet emotion that Stephanie and I are pleased to announce that we have finally completed our new ‘big’ house, and are ready to part ways with the beloved San Juan tiny house. While ecstatic and relieved to complete an amazing 1500 sq ft foundation build here on our property, we are really going to miss the San Juan.
This one-of-kind tiny house is a true labor of love, and played a strategic part of our life journey the past 6 years as we worked hard to grow the business, buy a very run-down piece of property south of town, clean it up, build a new shop, get relocated, and build a new house. We could not have done any of this without the financial savings and flexibility living in a tiny house afforded us for so long, not to mention having something much more comfortable (and beautiful) than living in RV like lotsa folks do while building a big house! I would have been content to live tiny for much longer, but sometimes life pulls us in other directions!
The asking price for the San Juan is $90,000 USD. When we built it 6 years ago, it would have been priced around 95k new. Since then, Covid and inflation have rocked the world. Everything is more expensive. A replica of this design would be 115k+ with today’s pricing. This price includes almost everything as seen in this blog post with a few changes:
- Off grid water is included. It can still run on shore water if needed. We can switch it to shore water only if desired, and this will free up some space in the bathroom where the tank lives.
- The off grid electrical system is not included. The batteries are 8 years old anyways and starting to lose efficiency. We can install a new system at additional cost if desired. We ended up removing the solar panels on the porch roof and replacing them with metal. We were parked in shade and they didn’t do well. A ground mounted system some 60 feet away from the house in full sun worked much better.
- The house has a little wear and tear with 2 people and 2 furballs living in it for 6 years. We are going to give it a real good clean and refresh with paint, clear coat, etc. The original reclaimed elm flooring took a beating and will be replaced. (buyer’s choice) We are thinking the herringbone entry platform will remain though.
- The Kimberley wood stove as seen in original photos performed very poorly and was replaced with Tiny Woodstoves Dwarf 3kW lite, which has performed very well in Colorado winters!
- The loft pipe railing was removed. We found it too cumbersome to move items up and down, and used the narrow section over the fridge as bookshelf. We can replace it if desired. We also removed the plywood storage boxes under the porthole windows on passenger side. They limited storage height and took space for when we had two guests needing to sleep up there
- we are including a dehumidifier for use in the winter. If you start seeing condensation on the glass, time to turn it on!
- We are able to make some modifications if desired. For instance, if you would like to add a combo washer/dryer where the solar equipment used to reside, we can make it happen. Any such changes will be billed on a time and material basis in addition to the base price
- Delivery can be arranged to anywhere in the lower 48 and is also extra, unless the move is local
If I’m missing anything here, please use the contact page to drop me a line. We really wish we could keep it as a guest house or rental, but unfortunately the main house build has put our finances in a position that dictates otherwise. We’re hopeful someone else can give her a good home!
The Bold Text
With this out of the way, let’s jump in to the other exciting news! Now that I no longer have a house to build, I can devote more time to the business. A LOT more time. We’re ramping production capability back up. I was limiting the build calendar to one house at a time to keep things manageable, but now we’ll go back to doing at least two builds at once, maybe a tad more depending on the project (small simple builds, and shell builds are easier to slip in).
Our commitment to quality, customization, and value will always take priority over quantity, so rest assured anyone ordering a tiny house from us will receive the best service possible. In fact, with our new facility starting to get really dialed in, our process and final product is only getting better.
This said, we now have build slots starting as soon as July 2024. Please keep us in mind if you are having difficulty finding a builder with availability this summer or fall. Plenty of 2025 slots available too!
If you are a customer wanting a tiny house build within the state of Colorado, we are in serious conversations with the state to get setup as an approved Manufacturer. To our knowledge, no other builder has signed up as the date of this blog post. Expect this to change very soon!
A lot of Colorado builders have closed down shop in the past year or two. It’s a shame since most of them were friends of mine, and also did wonderful work. The tiny house community misses them already. I count my blessings that RMTH was able to “stick it out” and keep on doing what we love best, building awesome tiny houses at a great value. Thanks for checking in!
